An elderly man has been seriously injured in a hit-and-run incident in Widnes, near Runcorn.  

The 88-year-old victim was riding a mobility scooter when he was hit by a blue Piaggio Beverly moped on Saturday afternoon. 

Cheshire Police said the pensioner, a local of the area, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
He was still receiving treatment as of today.

Four people were arrested in connection with the incident, including the moped rider, and an individual riding a fluorescent quad bike thought to have been travelling alongside the moped at the time of the collision.

The suspects were apprehended after fleeing the scene following a search by police helicopter.

The collision happened at 12.27pm on Lower House Lane on Saturday, Cheshire Police said, adding that both the moped and the quad bike had 'failed to stop' following the incident.

In a statement on Sunday, police said: 'A 26-year-old man from Runcorn and a 20-year-old woman from Widnes were arrested on suspicion of failing to stop following a collision, causing serious injury by dangerous driving and drug driving.'

It added that: 'A 31-year-old man and a 27-year-old man, both from Widnes, were also arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and for failing to stop after a collision.'   

Cheshire Police added that the 26-year-old, 20-year-old and 31-year-old had since been 'released under investigation' and that the 27-year-old 'remains in custody being questioned by detectives'.
